Shelly Xie
Creator, “The Moving Hands”
Sand Animation
Shelly Xie is an artist and a recent Stanford University graduate with a B.S. with Honors in Biology and a minor in Creative Writing. At Stanford, Shelly was a student researcher in the lab of Dr. Michael Hsieh, who specializes in the study of schistosomiasis, a parasite common in natural water sources and responsible for severe adverse health effects including bladder cancer, chronic kidney failure, and liver damage. Shelly brought this area of knowledge to her project for Stanford’s Senior Reflection program, a new initiative that allows students to pursue an in-depth creative project that combines science and the arts. Shelly’s creative work, sand animation, told the story and life cycle of the debilitating schistosomiasis infection in Ghana. Shelly plans a future in medicine, hoping to positively impact human health, understanding, and education through interfacing clinical medicine, research and art.

Espen Siversten is the COO of Type A Machines, a San Francisco-based startup that manufactures desktop 3D printers. A former teacher at the award-winning international school of entrepreneurship known as the KaosPilots, Espen is also co-founder of MemeMaker.com – the first retailer in Denmark to focus on the Arduino prototyping platform. Espen brings 3D printing and entrepreneurship together, enabling students at schools, universities and public libraries to realize their ideas and capitalize on them in a learning-by-doing and just-in-time development environment.

Charles (“Chuck”) H. House, Executive Director of InnovaScapes Institute, is the author of The HP Phenomenon: Innovation and Business Transformation. Chuck has held many leadership positions across the innovation-education spectrum, including Chancellor of Cogswell College; Director of Media X at Stanford University, and leadership roles at Hewlett-Packard, Intel and several smaller companies. He holds numerous awards, including ACM and IEEE Fellow, Smithsonian Wizard of Computing, Intrapreneuring Honor Roll, and the HP Medal of Defiance.

She has worked with multiple international firms, including Sun-Maid Raisins, Google and The Discovery Channel.

Alex Eckert is a Vice Principal at Livermore (CA) High School. As a teacher he sought to create engaging and meaningful learning experiences for his students. Inspired by Daniel Pink’s A Whole New Mind, Alex seeks to foster innovation and design in every classroom. His career in education began 9 years ago in Oxnard, CA. His passion for education compels him to search for ways that we can capture the interest of our students through inquiry and appeal to their desire for stimulation. How can we adapt from the old model of teacher-driven instruction to a more appropriate model where our students are co-creators of their learning?

Vicki Zakrzewski

Vicki Zakrzewski is the Education Director of the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley. The Center studies the psychology, sociology, and neuroscience of well-being, and teaches skills that foster a thriving, resilient, and compassionate society. Vicki explores how the social/emotional skills of students contribute to their academic success and ability to become caring members of society. Vicki earned her Ph.D. in Education and Positive Psychology from Claremont Graduate University, in their flag-ship program in positive psychology – the study of what makes individuals, workplaces, and institutions thrive. She provides science-based tips for promoting the social and emotional development of students, teachers, and administrators, and for creating positive school cultures.

Laurie Bodine, founder of START Leadership, advises Fortune 500 companies, start-ups, non-profits and schools on strategic planning, innovation and leadership development. As both a parent and an executive strategist, Laurie has identified striking similarities between the leaders of exceptional businesses and teachers in exceptional classrooms. She founded START Leadership to leverage her insights and address the alarming increase in teen anxiety, depression, and suicide prevalent in today’s high-pressure, high-stakes culture. Integrating her experience as a businessperson, a parent, and a research and policy advisor to Stanford’s Challenge Success campaign, Laurie’s evidence-based leadership curriculum answers the question, “What can we do instead to prepare the next generation to lead well in their lives?”

Dustin Haisler

Dustin Haisler, President of KlabLab, is inspired to change education and the way people interact with the world we live in. Under his direction, KlabLab launched The Sound of Knowledge Tour 2012, which brings a mobile recording studio to schools. In this studio, students write, perform and record their songs with KlabLab’s team of professional musicians and educators. This end result is engaged students and a collaborative approach to classroom learning. Previously, as CIO and assistant City Manager of Manor, Texas, Dustin launched ‘Manor Lab,’ an online civic engagement platform.

Ro Khanna

Ro Khanna served two years as Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Department of Commerce with the Obama Administration. Ro took what he learned about the innovations needed to keep America’s strong manufacturing engine running to write the just-published Entrepreneurial Nation. He currently specializes in advising high-tech companies as part of the Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich and Rosati Law Firm. Ro is on the board of a number of local nonprofits and teaches as a visiting lecturer in the Department of Economics at Stanford.

Meagan Fallone

Meagan Fallone champions the power of women as agents of sustainable change and poverty reduction. Working alongside Barefoot College’s Founder, Bunker Roy, Meagan coordinates the International Women’s Barefoot Solar Engineering program in more than 54 countries. Barefoot College introduces and demystifies modern technologies to meet basic human needs: Drinking water (rainwater harvesting), Basic lighting (solar electrification), Livelihood development (handicrafts, health communications) and Education (Rural Solar Night Schools). Born in New Zealand, Meagan is a mother of 3 and a passionate mountaineer; she lives between Switzerland, Tanzania and India.

Andrew Todhunter
Author – Filmmaker
Lecturer, Stanford University
Andrew Todhunter teaches writing and interdisciplinary creativity at Stanford through the Department of Biology and the Program in Writing and Rhetoric. With Professor Susan McConnell, he co-founded The Senior Reflection in Biology, a three-quarter course sequence allowing Stanford seniors to meld science and the arts in a major creative project. He also serves as a story advisor for the Stanford Storytelling Project. As an author and journalist Andrew Todhunter has contributed articles and essays to The Atlantic Monthly, National Geographic, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post Sunday Magazine, Smithsonian, and Men’s Journal, among other publications. He has published three books of narrative non-fiction—his last book, A Meal Observed, won the 2005 PEN USA Literary Award for Creative Nonfiction.

Lisa Highfill

Lisa Highfill is a thinker, philosopher, debater, and educator interested in helping to develop 21st century thinkers. A 19-year veteran teacher, Lisa’s passion centers on innovative learning strategies that leverage modern learning models and technology. For 13 years, she has been a district mentor and staff developer for technology, utilizing her masters in Ed Tech leadership. Lisa is also a Google Certified Teacher and an inaugural member of the YouTube Star Teachers.

Jade Meskill

Jade Meskill works in the highly dynamic area of culture change, team improvement and organizational transformation. Jade will discuss how his early education through Montessori school was a perfect match for supporting his penchant for creative exploration, and caused his success as a serial entrepreneur and co-founder of Gangplank, the best collaborative workspace for creative people and innovative companies in Metro Phoenix.

Erika Gruidl
Founder, Livermore High Shooting Stars
Freshman, Santa Clara University
Erika Gruidl founded the Livermore (Calif.) High Shooting Stars, a cheering squad comprised of Special Needs students, in 2010. Erika loved performing as a varsity cheerleader for her school and believed Special Needs students deserved the chance to share in the experience. After initial resistance, the Shooting Stars were ultimately acknowledged, recognized and welcomed by the entire student body. Today, Livermore High Shooting Stars has tripled in size, growing from 5 to 15 members. It continues under the guidance of the Special Day Class teachers and Livermore High School Cheerleaders.
Erika currently studies Biochemistry at Santa Clara University.
